Overview

This Type 2 to Type 2 EV charging cable is designed for Type 2 electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids, allowing them to charge from Type 2 socketed AC EVSEs and BYO-cable public AC charging points.

It is ideal for most NZ-new, UK-import, European, Korean, Chinese, and modern EVs with a Type 2 AC charge port.

This cable is useful for socketed home EVSEs, malls, supermarkets, motels, workplaces, and other AC charging locations where you are expected to bring your own cable.

Best for

  • Type 2 EVs and plug-in hybrids
  • Most NZ-new, UK-import, European, Korean, Chinese, and modern EVs
  • Charging from Type 2 socketed wall EVSEs
  • BYO-cable public AC charging locations
  • Keeping in the boot for AC charging away from home

Compatibility

EVSE side: Type 2 plug
Vehicle side: Type 2 plug

This cable is intended for vehicles with a Type 2 AC charge port. Common Type 2 vehicles in New Zealand include Tesla Model 3/Y, BYD Atto 3/Dolphin/Seal, MG ZS EV/MG4, Hyundai Ioniq/Kona/Ioniq 5, Kia Niro EV/EV6/EV9, Polestar 2, Volvo, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, VW, Peugeot, Renault, Mini, Ford, LDV, Toyota bZ4X, Subaru Solterra, and many other EVs and PHEVs.

Some vehicles can be Type 1, Type 2, or NACS/Tesla depending on year, market, and whether they are NZ-new or imported, so please check your charge port before ordering.

Key features

  • Type 2 to Type 2 connection: charge Type 2 vehicles from Type 2 socketed AC EVSEs
  • 22kW three-phase rating: suitable for up to 22kW AC charging where the EVSE and vehicle support it
  • 32A rating: avoids the charging speed limits of cheaper 16A cables
  • BYO-cable public charging: useful at malls, motels, supermarkets, workplaces, and destination chargers
  • Portable: keep it in the boot for AC charging away from home
  • AC charging only: designed for Type 2 AC charging points, not DC fast charging

Why cable rating matters

AC charging speed is limited by the lowest-rated part of the charging setup. Some charging cables are only rated for 16A single-phase, which can limit charging to around 3.6kW even if the EVSE and vehicle could support more.

This cable is rated for 32A three-phase AC charging, allowing up to 22kW where supported. It can also be used on single-phase 7.2kW EVSEs and with single-phase vehicles; the car and EVSE will simply charge at the highest rate they both support.

As a guide, a suitable 32A single-phase EVSE can add roughly 50–55km of range per hour to a typical efficient EV. A suitable 32A three-phase EVSE with a compatible vehicle can add roughly 120–150km of range per hour.

Actual charging speed depends on the EVSE, vehicle, installation, available supply, vehicle settings, battery state, and charging losses.

Technical specifications

  • EVSE side: Type 2 plug
  • Vehicle side: Type 2 plug
  • Rated current: 32A
  • Phase: Three phase
  • Rated power: Up to 22kW
  • Use: AC charging only

Important notes

  • This cable does not enable DC fast charging.
  • This cable is for Type 2 socketed EVSEs and BYO-cable AC charging locations, not tethered Type 2 EVSEs with a fixed cable.
  • If your vehicle has a Type 1 or NACS/Tesla charge port, you will need a different cable.
  • Please check your vehicle charge port before ordering, or get in touch if you are unsure.

Choosing the right cable

Choose this Type 2 to Type 2 cable if your vehicle has a Type 2 AC charge port and you want to charge from Type 2 socketed AC EVSEs.

For Type 1 vehicles, use a Type 2 to Type 1 cable. For Japanese-import Teslas with the NACS/Tesla charge port, use a Type 2 to NACS cable.
