Wall-mounted EVSEs are the best long-term solution for regular home or workplace EV charging. Compared with a portable EVSE, a wall unit is usually faster, tidier, more convenient, and better suited to everyday use.

Most single-phase wall-mounted EVSEs can charge at up to 32A, adding roughly 50–55km of range per hour to a typical efficient EV. If you have three-phase power available, a three-phase EVSE can be a great future-proof option, although not every EV can use three-phase AC charging. A three-phase EV can still charge from a single-phase EVSE, and a single-phase EV can safely charge from a three-phase EVSE — the vehicle and EVSE will simply charge at the rate the vehicle supports.

The main differences between wall-mounted EVSEs are usually whether they are tethered or socketed, and what smart features they include. Smart features can include app control, scheduling, solar charging, usage tracking, OCPP support, and dynamic load balancing. Dynamic load balancing is especially useful because it can reduce EV charging power automatically to help stop your home from overloading when other appliances are in use.

OCPP support is also worth considering for future-proofing. In many places around the world, energy companies and charging networks are moving toward smarter, more controllable EV charging. With compatible hardware and services, OCPP can allow opt-in control where charging can be slowed or managed during peak demand periods.

We generally prefer socketed EVSEs where practical. A socketed unit lets you change cables easily, suits multi-EV households with different vehicle ports, and means you can take your cable with you to BYO cable AC charging locations such as malls, supermarkets, motels, and public destination chargers.
