Overview

The Classic Plus 5.0 Type 2 Portable EVSE is a premium 10A portable EV charging cable for Type 2 electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids.

It plugs into a standard New Zealand household socket and gives you a practical way to charge at home, at work, while travelling, or as a high-quality backup EVSE to keep in the car. With selectable current settings, a clear OLED display, delayed start timer, built-in safety protection, wall mounting cradle, carry bag, and a long 9m cable, it is a practical and well-finished portable EVSE for everyday use.

If you want faster portable charging and have access to a suitable 16A caravan-style outlet, the Premium 4.0 Type 2 16A Portable EVSE may be a better fit. For the best long-term home charging setup, a wall-mounted EVSE is usually the better solution.

Best for

  • Type 2 EV and PHEV owners wanting a high-quality 10A portable EVSE
  • Regular charging from a standard NZ household socket
  • Home, work, travel, bach, or backup charging
  • Drivers who want a portable EVSE with convenience features such as a display, timer, cradle, and carry bag
  • Situations where portability is important but quality and ease of use still matter

Compatibility

Vehicle connector: Type 2 / Mennekes / IEC 62196-2

Charging speed guide

A 10A portable EVSE is a flexible charging option that works from a standard household socket. For faster regular charging, a 16A portable EVSE or wall-mounted EVSE may be a better long-term choice.

  • 10A portable EVSE: adds roughly 15–18km of range per hour, or around 120–145km from an 8-hour overnight charge.
  • 16A portable EVSE: requires a suitable 16A caravan-style outlet and adds roughly 25–28km of range per hour, or around 200–225km from an 8-hour charge.
  • 32A wall-mounted EVSE: the best solution for regular home charging, adding roughly 50–55km of range per hour. On many EVs, this can add most or all of a full charge overnight.

As a rough example, these figures are based on a 60kWh EV using around 130Wh/km. Actual charging speed will vary depending on the vehicle, battery state, EVSE settings, wiring, charging losses, and whether the vehicle reaches full charge before the end of the charging session.

Choosing the right EV charging setup

The Classic Plus 5.0 Type 2 is a great choice if you want a high-quality 10A portable EVSE for regular use from a standard household socket.

If you have a suitable 16A caravan-style outlet and want faster portable charging, consider the Premium 4.0 Type 2 16A Portable EVSE.

For the best everyday home charging setup, a 32A wall-mounted EVSE is usually the better long-term solution. View our range of wall-mounted EVSEs.

Important safety notes

  • Always plug the EVSE directly into a suitable fixed wall outlet.
  • Do not use extension leads, multi-boards, double adapters, travel adapters, or plug converters.
  • Unwind the cable fully before charging.
  • If the outlet, plug, or cable becomes hot, loose, damaged, or discoloured, stop using it and have it checked.
  • For regular EV charging, make sure the outlet and wiring are in good condition and suitable for continuous charging loads.
