Overview

The Premium 4.0 Type 1 16A Portable EVSE is a higher-output portable EV charging cable for Type 1 electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids.

It is designed for use with a suitable 16A caravan-style outlet and can provide faster charging than a standard 10A household-socket EVSE. With selectable current settings, a clear display, delayed start timer, built-in safety protection, and an 8.5m total cable length, it is a practical option for Type 1 EV owners who want faster portable charging where a 16A outlet is available.

This EVSE has a 16A caravan-style plug, so it will not plug into a normal household socket. If you want an EVSE for a standard wall socket, choose the Classic Plus 5.0 Type 1 Portable EVSE instead.

Best for

  • Type 1 EV and PHEV owners wanting faster portable charging than a 10A household socket can provide
  • Homes, garages, workshops, or baches with a suitable 16A caravan-style outlet
  • Drivers who want a portable EVSE but do not want to rely on slower 10A charging
  • Regular charging where a fixed wall-mounted EVSE is not practical
  • Backup or travel charging where a suitable 16A outlet is available

Compatibility

Vehicle connector: Type 1 / SAE J1772

Suitable for EVs and plug-in hybrids with a Type 1 charging port. Common Type 1 vehicles in New Zealand include many Japanese-import Nissan Leaf models, Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, Mitsubishi i-MiEV, Toyota Prius Plug-in / Prius PHV, Nissan e-NV200, and some imported plug-in hybrid or EV models from BMW, Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, Honda, Chevrolet, and others.

Some models can be Type 1 or Type 2 depending on year, country of origin, and whether the vehicle is NZ-new or imported. Please check the shape of your charge port before ordering, or contact us and we can help confirm the right EVSE.

Charging speed guide

A 16A portable EVSE is a useful step up from a standard 10A household-socket EVSE. For the fastest everyday home AC charging, a 32A wall-mounted EVSE is usually the better long-term solution.

  • 10A portable EVSE: adds roughly 15–18km of range per hour, or around 120–145km from an 8-hour overnight charge.
  • 16A portable EVSE: adds roughly 25–28km of range per hour, or around 200–225km from an 8-hour charge.
  • 32A wall-mounted EVSE: the best solution for regular home charging, adding roughly 50–55km of range per hour. On many EVs, this can add most or all of a full charge overnight.

As a rough example, these figures are based on a 60kWh EV using around 130Wh/km. Actual charging speed will vary depending on the vehicle, battery state, EVSE settings, wiring, charging losses, and whether the vehicle reaches full charge before the end of the charging session.

Choosing the right EV charging setup

The Premium 4.0 Type 1 16A Portable EVSE is a great choice if you have access to a suitable 16A caravan-style outlet and want faster portable charging than a standard 10A household socket can provide.

If you want an EVSE that plugs into a normal household socket, choose the Classic Plus 5.0 Type 1 Portable EVSE instead.

If you only need a lower-cost EVSE for occasional use, travel, bach charging, or emergency backup, the LRCD Type 1 10A Portable EVSE may be a more budget-friendly option.

For the best everyday home charging setup, a 32A wall-mounted EVSE is usually the better long-term solution. View our range of wall-mounted EVSEs.

Important safety notes

  • This EVSE requires a suitable 16A caravan-style outlet and must not be adapted to fit a normal 10A household socket.
  • Always plug the EVSE directly into a suitable fixed outlet.
  • Do not use extension leads, multi-boards, double adapters, travel adapters, plug converters, or homemade adapters.
  • Unwind the cable fully before charging.
  • If the outlet, plug, or cable becomes hot, loose, damaged, or discoloured, stop using it and have it checked.
  • For regular EV charging, make sure the outlet and wiring are in good condition and suitable for continuous charging loads.
